Matevulu Lodge is a serene, family-run bed and breakfast situated on the stunning East Coast of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. Designed to offer an authentic and tranquil escape, the lodge is not a traditional hotel or resort but a peaceful retreat where guests can disconnect and immerse themselves in nature. It operates as a small, eco-friendly property, promoting sustainability through initiatives like a fruit and vegetable garden, a chicken coop, and the use of eco-friendly washing products.
The lodge offers a range of facilities to ensure a comfortable and independent stay. Guests have access to complimentary Wi-Fi, a shared main kitchen (or "Fare") that is fully equipped for self-catering, a barbecue and firepit area, and free parking. Other amenities include laundry service (for a fee), luggage storage, and a beer and wine selection for sale. The property is also "Triple C Certified" for safety, ensuring a clean and caring environment.
Matevulu Lodge is a child-friendly property, with its Family Bungalow featuring a separate room with bunk beds. The grounds and beach have shallow, safe waters, and the lodge can provide various baby accessories upon request, including a cot with a mosquito net, a baby bathtub, a high chair, and a box of books and toys.
The lodge's prime location provides direct access to a variety of activities. On-site, guests can enjoy complimentary use of kayaks, stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), and snorkeling gear to explore the bay and surrounding reefs. The lodge is uniquely positioned between two of Espiritu Santo's famous natural wonders: the Riri and Matevulu Blueholes. Both can be reached via a pleasant half-hour walk or a scenic kayak ride up their pristine rivers. Other recommended activities include exploring nearby islands by boat, visiting WWII wreck sites, and experiencing local cultural villages.
Matevulu Lodge is a Bed & Breakfast, so it does not have an on-site restaurant or bar. A complimentary continental breakfast, including fresh fruits and homemade jams, is served daily in the main shared kitchen. For lunch and dinner, guests are encouraged to bring their own food supplies from town to use the communal, fully-equipped kitchen. For those who prefer not to cook, two local restaurants are a five-minute drive away, and a catering service can deliver meals to the lodge with 48 hours' notice.
The lodge features four cozy beachfront bungalows designed for comfort and privacy. The entire lodge can be privatized for groups of up to 14 people.
Double Bungalow: This traditional-style bungalow features a double bed, a private en-suite bathroom with ocean views, and a private beachfront deck. It accommodates up to two people.
Premium Bungalow: A more spacious option with a queen bed and a single bed that can be used as a sofa. It includes a lounge area and a luxurious Italian-style bathroom, accommodating up to three people.
Family Bungalow: Ideal for larger groups, this bungalow consists of two separate rooms. The parental room has a queen bed and a single bed (as a sofa), while a separate kids' room is equipped with two bunk beds and a single bed. It can accommodate up to seven people.
Matevulu Lodge is located on the East Coast Road of Espiritu Santo, approximately a 20-minute drive from the main town of Luganville. It is situated directly between the Riri and Matevulu Blueholes. Guests are advised to arrange transport from the Luganville airport or town. The best way to get there is by road, and it's recommended to stock up on groceries in Luganville before heading to the lodge.
