Port Douglas is a sea-side village located on Queensland's Far North Coast, around an hour north of Cairns. It is a great base for visiting the Great Barrier Reef with plenty of day trips available. Just north of Port Douglas is the World's oldest living forest, the Daintree. Explore this ancient rainforest by yourself or take advantage of the abundance of tours available. Port Douglas has a warm climate year round. Average winter temperatures are from 17 degrees Celsius to 25 with low rainfall, and summer temps range from 23 degrees Celsius to 30 with high rainfall and humidity. The spectacular Great Barrier Reef comprises of over 3,000 individual reefs along the Queensland coastline spanning almost 350,000 square kilometres. Port Douglas is a great base to explore the reef with a number of cruises offering day trips. Agincourt Reef is the most accessible outer reef location from Port Douglas, with a large pontoon featuring an underwater observatory, snorkel platform and restaurant and bar. There are plenty of other ways to see the reef from helicopter tours to sailing trips and scuba diving.
The Port Douglas Markets were established almost 35 years ago and are famous for serving up a wide variety of hand-crafted goods, locally produced food and seasonal fresh produce. The markets are open every Sunday from 8am to 1.30pm at Market Park on Wharf St near Anzac Park. You can expect to find exquisite gem stones and hand crafted jewellery, tropical giftware, fresh local fruit and veg, clothing, homewares and a variety of food stalls. Mossman Farmers Markets are held every Saturday morning.
A visit to Mossman Gorge is a must-do for anyone travelling to the beautiful Far North Queensland region. Explore the Daintree Rainforest - the oldest continually surviving rainforest on earth - during a guided tour, or discover its wonders on your own. The world heritage listed Daintree Rainforest begins a short drive north of Mossman then continues northwards between the coastal ranges and the Coral Sea towards the Bloomfield River. There are plenty of tours to choose from including cruising the Daintree River, 4WD tours, nature tours and walks.
Around 25 minutes drive south of Port Douglas. The Crocodile Show adventure features a a huge saltwater crocodile hand fed in a presentation and learn about Australia's indigenous Freshwater crocodile. In the Crocodile Atttack Show experienced keepers demonstrate the notorious death roll and head shake. The adventure park also has a Crocodile Farm tour and snake show. Open daily from 8.30am - 5pm.
