Byron Bay is located on the far-north coast of NSW. It is around a 8hr 30min drive north of Sydney and two hours south of Brisbane.
Byron is known for its spectacular beaches, forested hinterland and distinctive dining and shopping experiences.
Byron Bay has a mild, temperate climate, with warm summers and gentle winters. Summer temps range from 20°C to 27°C with winter temps from 12°C up to 20°C.
There is a good choice of accommodation ranging from budget to luxury with some excellent family friendly options available.
The Discovery Holiday Park - Byron Bay is located approximately 2 km north of the Byron town centre. It offers self-contained studio, one, two and 3 bedroom cabins as well as deluxe safari tents. Held on the first Sunday of every month at Main Beach, the Byron Community Markets showcase products from the Byron region artists. There are ceramicists, fashion designers, antique collectors and jewellery makers as well as homewares, clothes, fresh fruit, nuts and veges. You can also enjoy an exciting array of exotic foods and coffee, baked goods and local live music. The second Sunday each month the markets are held at The Channon and the third Sunday at Bangalow.
Located just north of Byron, The Farm is an 80 acre working farm that is home to a variety of growers, producers, eateries and educators. Everything grown or raised is produced by chemical free and sustainable methods. There are onsite workshops available for adults and children as well as guided and self-guided tours, animal visits, school holiday activities and a kids playground. Three Blue Ducks run the restaurant, cafe and produce store at The Farm. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and features locally produced fare.
The Byron Hinterland offers a lot to discover - from heritage listed rainforests and historic towns with fantastic shopping and dining experiences. There are a maize of country roads to explore and numerous towns like Bangalow, Newrybar, Alstonville and Nimbin plus many many more to discover. The beautiful Mount Warning, receiving the first morning light on the Australian mainland, has self -guided tours to the top which take around 2 hours. There are five rainforest national parks to explore as well.
Cape Byron lighthouse was built over 100 years ago to alert ships to Australia's most easterly point. It is located 2km from the Byron township and offers spectacular coastal views along a walking track that takes you through rainforests, beaches and clifftops.It was manually operated until 1989 and is now an automated light visible from the Byron Bay township. A maritime museum, open daily, is situated at the base of the lighthouse gives visitors a unique historical insight into the lighthouse and town of Byron Bay. Tours of the lighthouse are run daily.
Around 15 minutes drive north of Byron is the seaside town of Brunswick Heads. It offers great surfing, swimming, fishing and water sports with hire facilities available. The beautiful Brunswick River is perfect for a range of activities including fishing and kayaking. Main beach is a popular surfing beach and stretches all the way south to Byron. For families the small Torakina beach, situated at the mouth of the Brunswick River, is a safe swimming beach for kids. It has BBQ and change facilities available. The Brunswick Hotel is a classic Aussie pub with a fantastic beer garden.
There are a number of great beaches to choose from in the Byron area. Byron itself has Main beach directly in front of town, Belongil Breach directly north and Clarks beach to the south. All these beaches are patrolled. The Pass is one of the most popular surf breaks in NSW and it's not surprising to see hundreds of surfers there. Wategos is the next beach and it's perfect for families being a sheltered north facing beach. On the southern side of the lighthouse, Tallow Beach stretches for over 6km and is great for surfing and swimming although can be susceptible to rips so stay within the flags.
