I took my seven-year old son to Heron
Island in April. He had a marvellous time. There is an excellent, educational,
and fun programme for 7 to 12 year olds called Junior Rangers. In this the kids
learn a huge amount about marine biology in an very enjoyable way. Like many of
the kids there my son rushed to sign up to the activities every morning. Another
very good thing for him was that, because the resort was small, all the children
meet up at the (pretty small) pool and quickly form friendships, exploring the
beaches etc. A very safe island.
For adults, there is magnificent
snorkelling, and diving, and excellent information talks and Reef walks and
fishing trips. You can walk out of your unit straight out onto the Reef!. If you
are not interested in this, its reading or zip, as there is very little else for
adults to do. If it rains, the adult activities tend to be called off. The place
is crying out for a gym/spa and I believe P and O are intending to put one in
soon. The food is adequate: Lots of it, many buffets, very casual and
easy-going. Not a romantic place to eat though.
On balance, we loved the island,
because learning about the Reef was just so interesting and being next to the
Reef amazing. Green turtle hatchlings were running down the beach to the sea.
Fantastic for kids 7-11 and adults who like the water or reading.
