I have stayed at the Fruits of Raro three times now and have just booked my 4th trip. I go to Rarotonga to work, sometimes I go on my own and sometimes with the family. When I go on my own I always stay at the Fruits of Raro. The family are wonderful and the accommodation is clean, tidy and very cost effective. The beach and some of the islands best snorkeling is literally at your back door. Excellent.

There is a bit of a problem with the Fruits of Rarotonga houses, there are 4 of them. Houses number 1,2 and 4 are fine. Number 3 is rundown and needs a lot of work, the bathroom is extremely icky, but is still charged out at $100 per night. It also has problems like the deck is right next door to a huge slab of concrete that radiates heat all day and night - which when the temperature is already over 30 degrees, in a house with no fans or air conditioning, is a bit much to take. There is also no way of stopping small children getting onto the adjacent road, unless you close all the doors in the house - again a bit much on a 30 degree day.
If you want to stay in the Fruits accommodation, make sure you get House number 4 (if you are a family) or houses number 1 and 2 if you are a couple. Don't take house number 3 unless you can wangle a substantial discount. House number 4 has tv, ceiling fans, can be shut off from the road and has a decent bathroom and living area - if it costs extra, it is worth paying.

Firstly, I would like to say thank you for this very informative site. If it wasn't for this site, we would have missed out on a wonderful and very affordable holiday to the Cook Islands.
After reading a posting on this site about the Fruits of Rarotonga, Cook Islands, I telephoned the people who left a posting on this site and had great feedback from them. We were going to stay
at the Rarotongan Beach Resort but could only afford to stay one week. When we organised accommodation with Shane and Heather at the Fruits of Rarotonga, we were able to extend our stay another
week which was absolutely fantastic. We booked a house right on the beach for $100.00NZ (2 adults 2 kids) a night. It has obviously gone up from $70.00NZ as stated in the posting we read. Anyway, it
is well worth the money anyway. The house we stayed in was neat and tidy, roomy, and had everything you needed in it. There is a local shop right next door or very close if you stay in one of their
other houses. There is a beautiful view from each of the houses looking out over the lagoon and reef, and chickens and the local dogs come and visit every day. The snorkelling is very good with lots
of fish but not as good as the Great Barrier Reef naturally. The Fruits of Rarotonga shop has the most delicious fruit smoothies (we kept going back for more), chutneys and jams. The Fruits of Rarotonga
is not in a very touristy spot on the island but the bus stop is right outside the shop and you can catch it either side of the road (as it is a ring road). We did go to the Rarotongan Beach Resort and
it looked like a real nice place with everything that you need but if you are holidaying on a budget, you can't beat staying at the Fruits of Rarotonga. We went to a local show not far from the Fruits of
Rarotonga at Piri's place. Piri is the most funny, entertaining man who climbs coconut trees and starts a fire with two sticks only. We had a really good time there and had a feast which we prepared ourselves
while he showed us what to do. We can highly recommend going to see him. The hula dancing at the Rarotonga Beach Resort is on a Wednesday night and the buffet meal included with it is yummy. Well this is just
a little snippet of our time at the Cooks and we all would love to go back again. If you can afford it, two weeks is definitely better than one. You only just start enjoying yourself in one week and then it
is all over. If it wasn't for the Fruits of Rarotonga, we would have missed out on another week which would have been a real let down.

April 2002
Hi , we just arrived back from the Cook Islands on the 27th April 2002.
We have never travelled there before and we took 13 people with us .
There were 6 adults + 7 children (ranging from 7 years to 15 years ).
We booked everything over the internet and that in it self is a warning
to people to check out all accommodation. Our first accommodation was to
be the Beach lodge apartments at Titikaveka - be warned it is a total dump
and not fit to be open . We got out of there quick smart and found the most
fantastic accommodation just 10 minutes down the road . It is called the
Fruits Of Rarotonga and the accommodation was three self contained houses
right on the waters edge of the most fantastic beach that also has the
best snorkeling in the area !!! and the best part is the price of $70.00 NZ
dollars a night !!! Muri beach is a walk down from there and you cannot
compare the waters at all . Muri Beach is charging a lot of money for
accommodation and all we could smell there at low tide was sewerage.
The kids had great fun as they snorkeled all day and had the most
amazing time spotting incredible fish !!! we named the area the grotto
and it was unbelievable , we found out that all the tourists from Muri
Beach came to the front of our accommodation to snorkel. It also belongs
to the most lovely accommodating people by the name of Shane and her
mother Heather who could not do enough for us . They lived on a farm
across the road and our kids all were allowed to pat the animals ,
such as pigs , goats, chickens etc. They also made the best home made
pickles and chutneys we have ever tasted . My husband, daughter and
I have always stayed at resorts and I must tell you this has been
the best holiday , as my daughter experienced the village
and it's people !!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS AND IT WON'T KILL YOUR BUDGET !!!
